The Venezuelan state television station (VTV) had been violated by fascists after the events of April 11, 2002, so the People took to the streets on the 13th to seek information about its president Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías, because censorship reigned in the right-wing media since the 12th with the transmission of cartoons and content out of context of what was actually happening: A coup d'etat.
“I voted for Chávez, I want his term to end”, "Chávez, my friend, the People are with you”, "Chávez did not resign, they have him kidnapped”, resounded the slogans of a sea of men and women who arrived at the Miraflores Palace. The Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB), which was at the seat of government, also revived the Bolivarian spirit that demanded respect for the Constitution and the return of the true Commander in Chief. The coup plotters, seeing the civic-military union, came out full of fear, allowing popular power and the military to take over the headquarters.
“I haven't given up!”
“I, Hugo Chávez Frías, Venezuelan, president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, declare: I have not renounced the legitimate power that the Venezuelan people gave me. Forever!! Hugo Chávez Frías,” wrote the Commander in a letter that Corporal Juan Bautista Rodríguez was responsible for taking to the Parachute Brigade in Maracay (BPM), where the so-called Operation Rescue of National Dignity was launched.
The People were not wrong, the media failed to deceive Venezuelans, and more and more people were joining the outskirts of the Miraflores Palace.
Diosdado Cabello, executive vice-president at the time, was sworn in as provisional president of resuming constitutional order as expressed in article 234 of the Magna Carta, while the People waited for the return of their leader.
Every 11 has its 13
Every April 13, the Day of National Dignity is celebrated because in a civic-military union they managed to rescue Hugo Chávez, an iconic date for revolutionaries who continue to be loyal to the Supreme Commander 20 years after this fact.
