During Con El Mazo Dando's 544th program, Diosdado Cabello, general secretary of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), spoke about the earthquake that occurred this Wednesday at 6:22pm with an epicenter near Socopó, in the state of Barinas.
Cabello indicated that the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.4 and was felt in several states of the country, with no reports of structural damage. He mentioned that hours before there had been another low-intensity earthquake in the state of Zulia.
“The epicenter was 32 kilometers from Socopó, in an area of geological faults. It was felt in several states, but there was no major structural damage,” he said.
The president attributed the resistance of the buildings to the country's construction standards, especially to the projects promoted by the Great Venezuela Housing Mission. He recalled that about five years ago, an earthquake of magnitude 7.3 occurred in Caracas, with no reports of collapses of residential buildings.
“That has a lot to do with the quality of construction in Venezuela. There was one of 7.3 in Caracas and nothing fell,” he said.
