Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian reiterated that the current tariff war was initiated by the United States and that Beijing only took countermeasures to protect its interests, as well as international equity and justice.
The spokesman recalled that Washington is already applying additional tariffs of 125 percent, while the Asian giant announced measures similar to products from that nation.
“" Even if the United States continues to impose higher tariffs, it will no longer make economic sense and will become a joke in the history of the world economy. Under the current tariff level, there is no possibility that the market will accept U.S. products exported to China,” he added.
Lin Jian underscored Beijing's decision to ignore the White House's “tariff game” from now on, although he reaffirmed that if Washington insists on infringing on China's interests, other countermeasures will be taken.
The White House spokeswoman said the day before that “the ball was on China's side” when referring to possible future negotiations.
Lin answered that if the United States really wants to resolve the problem through dialogue, it should abandon the system of maximum pressure, stop threatening and blackmailing, and hold dialogues with China on the basis of equality, respect and reciprocity.
On the other hand, in response to a direct question from the press, the spokesman did not confirm news that circulates in Western media and that shakes the aeronautical industry: the alleged suspension by Chinese airlines of receiving aircraft manufactured by Boeing .
With regard to trade tensions between the world's two main economies, the appointment of Li Chenggang as representative of international negotiations of the Ministry of Commerce and vice-minister of the same body was also news here today.
Beijing has reiterated on several occasions that the essence of cooperation with the United States is mutual benefit, always under the principles of equality, respect and shared profits.
