In the Political Declaration adopted on April 15 by the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations, it is reiterated that unilateral coercive measures constitute a flagrant violation of the Charter of the United Nations and of the fundamental principles of international law, and it is emphasized that the States responsible for imposing them “must immediately cease such illegal measures, and provide adequate guarantees and assurances of non-repetition”.
At the Third Meeting of National Coordinators held in Moscow, Russian Federation, the statement states that “we renew our firm support and solidarity with the peoples and governments of Cuba, Iran, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Zimbabwe in their struggles to overcome the harmful effects of the unilateral coercive measures imposed on their nations.”
The Group of Friends also expresses serious concern about ongoing attempts to undermine the multilateral trading system, with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its core, through the indiscriminate instrumentation of trade instruments, such as tariffs.
“We warn that, in the current context, tariffs will have a severe impact both on target countries and on the international trading system, in particular on the right to development of countries in the Global South.”
The Political Declaration also recognizes that human mobility is a complex issue that requires reinforced and sustained cooperation at the global level, “and we observe that international migration has been encouraged by external factors, including the illegal application of unilateral coercive measures”.
The Group expresses its deep concern about the growing attempts of certain Western countries to criminalize and securitize the migratory phenomenon, including through mass deportation programs and the forced transfer of mass migrants, in clear and flagrant violation of their most basic rights and human dignity.”
