The Embassy of Angola in Caracas, on the occasion of commemorating the 50th anniversary of its country's independence, paid tribute to the Liberator Simon Bolivar, with a wreath-laying ceremony before the sarcophagus that keeps his mortal remains in the National Pantheon.
The Deputy Minister for Asia, the Middle East and Oceania of the Ministry of People's Power for Foreign Affairs, Tatiana Pugh, said that “here, where you can breathe the air of freedom, we also celebrate the triumph of African freedom, because the independence struggles of Venezuela and Angola, although separated by an ocean and time, are united by the same spirit and the inalienable desire to be masters of our own destiny”.
He stressed that “on November 11, 1985, not only did a new nation emerge, but a beacon of hope was lit for the African continent and an example of dignity for the world”, being also a victory for all peoples who believe in justice and sovereignty.
In addition, he recalled “with gratitude the bonds of brotherhood that have united our peoples and governments”, both committed to building a multipolar, just and equitable world, reiterating that both countries have “been partners in past struggles and we are partners in present development, working side by side in international forums to defend the rights of the peoples of the south”.
The Deputy Minister concluded by stressing that “to honor Angola's 50 years is to honor the resilience of its people; it is to recognize their capacity to overcome the challenges of the civil war and embark on a path of national reconstruction and economic progress.”
For his part, the Consul General of the Republic of Angola accredited in Caracas, Mario Simao, stated that “today we celebrate not only the liberation from colonialism, but also the resilience and determination of our people to overcome challenges and build a better future”, specifying that the struggle for independence was long and difficult.
He mentioned that “over these 50 years, Angola has achieved remarkable achievements aimed at ensuring the well-being of the population, noting that “our future depends on the commitment of each and every Angolan to build a more united, just and prosperous Angola”.
The diplomat stressed that, on this special day, “we pay tribute to all those who fought for our freedom, to the heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives and dreams so that we could live in a free country. May their legacy inspire us to continue working for the good of our nation!” He added that these 50 years are a time of reflection, celebration and renewal of commitment to the future.
During the ceremony, the notes of the national anthems of both countries were sung and the authorities signed the guest book to the Mausoleum of the Liberator, accompanied by representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in the country.
Through his Telegram channel, the Minister of People's Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, on behalf of President Nicolás Maduro, congratulated the people of Angola on their anniversary of the proclamation of their independence from Portuguese colonization, claiming that “this achievement opened the way to peace, to a sovereign State and to the vindication of a diverse cultural identity”.
