On November 14, 1789, José Antonio Anzoátegui, a brilliant officer of the war of independence, was born in the city of Barcelona, who distinguished himself throughout his public life for his courage, discipline and intelligence, which is why his career, which was full of rapid promotions and successful interventions, earned him the obtaining of the Order of the Liberators of Venezuela and the Boyacá Cross.
Anzoátegui, one of the youngest heroes in the emancipatory movement, lived only 30 years, but with his fleeting rise, he reached a high rank, being a division general. He married María Teresa Arguindegui in 1812 and a year later he was named Captain, participating in the Battles of Araure, and in the first Battle of Carabobo in 1814, and then under the orders of General Rafael Urdaneta, he retired to New Granada.
While there, Anzoátegui was at the side of the Liberator, Simon Bolivar, in the operations of the takeover of Santa Fe de Bogotá, during the Liberation Campaign of New Granada. Later, together with Páez, he fought in the Plains Campaign. And in 1817, for his successful performance in the Battle of San Félix, he received his promotion to Brigadier General from General Piar, when he was just 28 years old. From there he went on to command the Liberator's Honor Guard.
The glorious career of this young general was cut short by his sudden death caused by illness. In honor of this great hero of independence, his surname gives name to one of the states of eastern Venezuela, whose capital is Barcelona.
