After the elections held on June 7, the counting of votes in the second round of elections in Peru keeps the country in suspense. The Popular Force candidate, Keiko Fujimori, has consolidated an advantage of 28,508 votes over her contender for Together for Peru, Roberto Sánchez, complicating the situation for the left-wing leader.
With 98.94% of the minutes processed, Fujimori has 50.07% of popular support, equivalent to 9 million 114 thousand 257 votes, while Sánchez stands at 49.92%, with 9 million 085 thousand 749 votes. Electoral bodies are expected to resolve the minutes observed over the course of the week to announce the final official results.
Although there are still close to 200,000 votes to be counted, the balance seems to tip in favor of the daughter of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori. The key to the final stretch lies in at least a thousand minutes under review, mostly concentrated in Lima, a region that historically represents the electoral stronghold of the right-wing leader.
This vote-by-vote definition is nothing new in recent Peruvian politics, remembering that in 2016 Pedro Pablo Kuczynski beat Fujimori by a minimum margin, in 2021 Pedro Castillo defeated the same candidate by just 40,000 votes, and in 2026 the president will be elected again by a difference of just a few thousand votes.
In parallel with the official count, the Together for Peru party announced that it will stop receiving financial donations through digital wallets. The measure was confirmed by the organization's treasurer, Luzmila Ayay Casas, after a call from the candidate Roberto Sánchez himself.
