Trujillo State Police Force (CPET) officials rescued 18 spider monkeys (ateles hybridus) in the municipality of José Felipe Márquez Cañizales, where two individuals were arrested for the crime of wildlife trafficking and illegal carrying of firearms.

Through a press release, the regional government announced that the copies were evaluated by the team of the Trujillo Territorial Ecosocialism Unit, an entity attached to the Ministry of Popular Power for Ecosocialism , and then released in a wooded area of the Loma Seca sector, El Socorro parish of the José Felipe Márquez Cañizales municipality.

The press release proves that the specimens, 13 adults and 5 young people, appeared fearful in their captivity. After the corresponding medical examination, it was decided to release them near the area where they were found. In the presence of police officers, firefighters, MINEC and the Public Ministry, the monkeys entered a wooded area of Loma Seca, El Socorro parish.

It transpired that the detainees are part of a clandestine network of wild animals, which kept them in captivity for commercialization.
