The number of fatalities caused by the powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake that shook the island of Mindanao, Philippines last Monday, June 8, has risen to 45, according to the official balance sheet presented this Wednesday by the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management.
The agency explained that, in addition to deaths, there are 487 people injured and 17 missing, figures that remain subject to verification and that could increase as work progresses to search and remove debris in the most affected areas.
The emergency has been aggravated by multiple landslides, which have buried entire communities and hampered rescue efforts. Risk management officials have confirmed that an entire neighborhood in Mindanao was covered by a massive landslide, while at least 13 residents were reported trapped under tons of mud in the town of Glan.
These events, together with the constant aftershocks, have forced the authorities to intensify operations in regions 11 and 12, where most of the structural damage and human losses are concentrated.
In terms of infrastructure, the Department of Public Works reported the fracture of 41 roads and 18 bridges, leaving most of these roads impassable and seriously complicating the entry of humanitarian aid to isolated areas.
The energy sector reported that nearly 130,000 users are still without electricity supply, which has led the Government to prioritize the restoration of fluid in hospitals and health centers, where hundreds of patients continue to be treated in makeshift tents due to the danger posed by replicas to hospital structures.
The social impact is massive, affecting more than 149,000 people and leaving thousands of families displaced in temporary evacuation centers. Faced with this scenario, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the rigorous inspection of critical buildings while emergency teams continue to distribute humanitarian assistance packages.
So far, the authorities have allocated nearly 4.8 million pesos to mitigate the most urgent needs, maintaining their efforts to stabilize the affected areas and provide comprehensive care for the thousands of victims.
