Pope Francis will be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, thus fulfilling the wish expressed by the Supreme Pontiff in December 2023, the official Vatican press reported.

In a statement, the Holy See indicated that there is no specific date of burial and that funerals depend on various factors, including the duration of the farewell acts and the logistics for the transfer of the body.

According to what was published by the TASS news agency, since the 13th century, this basilica has served as a resting place for several popes, with Clement IX, who died in 1669, the last one buried there. In addition, the famous sculptor and architect Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini also rests in this emblematic enclosure.

Francis , the 266th pontiff of the Catholic Church, assumed the papacy on March 13, 2013 after the resignation of Benedict XVI. He died on April 21 at the age of 88.
