President Maduro: Social networks have succumbed to blackmail and to the rule of the powerful in the United States

This Wednesday, January 1st, the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, assured that Social Networks (RRSS) have brought their actions to political power, for the manipulation of electoral processes, for the destabilization of countries.

The Head of State said that Instagram, YouTube and now TikTok have ended up succumbing to the blackmail and command of the powerful in the United States. “Social networks have created brain rot (...) We are obliged to protect the mental health of our countries. But we especially have a strong obligation to protect the mental health of boys, girls, and young people who are growing up. Because that concept called brain rot has already been studied, it is seriously affecting, even, the cognitive development of brain functions of our boys and girls dedicated to screens,” he said.

He recalled that the Venezuelan State acted “through the competent authority CONATEL, which is the National Telecommunications Council.”

“This group of fathers and mothers acted before the Constitutional Chamber. The Constitutional Chamber convened a series of hearings and judicial events and has issued a first clear, convincing ruling to force TikTok to open an office in Venezuela and to submit to Venezuelan laws. Second, he was fined the equivalent of 10 million dollars. And thirdly, he said that if this is not done, he will take more severe protective measures in the area of Venezuelan space,” he said in the interview with Ignacio Ramonet.
