The intense rains that have occurred over the past few hours in areas of southern and southeastern Mexico caused several streets in cities in the states of Chiapas and Quintana Roo to be flooded, official sources reported, the Telesur website reported.

Mexico's National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported that a low-pressure zone with cyclonic potential will cause intense rains and occasional torrential rains in eastern and southeastern Mexico, in addition to the Yucatan Peninsula.

The SMN warned that the rains “could generate landslides (...) as well as overflows and floods”.

Local media released videos in which it can be seen that the level of flooded water exceeded one meter in height in the city of Chetumal, in the touristic state of Quintana Roo.

Damage to infrastructure such as homes with significant water levels was also reported.

The Secretariat of National Defense reported that the Mexican Army is implementing Plan DN-III-E in its relief phase, due to the heavy rains.

The institution indicated that soldiers are carrying out desazolve activities, clearing roads, traffic control and removing trees in several municipalities in Quintana Roo.

For his part, geologist Sergio Almazán reported that heavy rains caused severe flooding in the southeast of the state of Chiapas, specifically in the municipality of Suchiate, where water levels of 1.20 to 1.50 meters are reported.
