In the United States, government officials could face charges of contempt of court, after violating the order of the federal judge, James Boasberg, which demanded that the removal of Venezuelan migrants be stopped
The official stated that he identified probable cause for filing such charges against officials, arguing that the presidential administration demonstrated a “deliberate disregard” for the order he previously issued. Most of the migrants' lawyers, as well as their families, pointed out that the deported people were not gang members, nor did they have an opportunity to dispute these accusations on the part of the Government.
Such statements by the judge represent a possibility that the administration will be punished for its actions and intensify the dispute of powers between the Executive and the Judiciary. “It's a strong rebuke to the administration, and it opens the door for new files to determine who actually ignored the orders,” explained Professor Jonathan Hafetz, who works at the Seton Hall University School of Law.
The White House Communications Director, Steven Cheung, stated through his X social network account that the administration would seek an immediate appeal.
