The First Meeting of the Political Consultation Mechanism between Venezuela and Angola was held as part of the official visit of the Venezuelan Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Africa, Yuri Pimentel, to the capital of the African country, Luanda. The delegations were led by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Angola, Ambassador Esmeralda Mendonça, and Deputy Minister Pimentel, who led the talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations.
The meeting was aimed at evaluating the state of cooperation in the political-diplomatic, economic-commercial, scientific-educational and cultural spheres. At the economic level, the parties recognized the potential of both countries as oil producers, stressing the importance of promoting the diversification of their national economies.
In the field of foreign policy, delegations exchanged views on regional, international and multilateral issues, such as the Angolan presidency in the African Union (AU), the prospects for cooperation between the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the AU, as well as the strengthening of relations between the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Peoples' Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in March of this year.
The parties also addressed the need for reform of the United Nations Security Council, national and international initiatives for the eradication of hunger, climate change and the strengthening of mutual support in candidacies in the international system. Political-diplomatic relations between Caracas and Luanda date back to December 6, 1986.
