Gas from the Russian Federation stopped being supplied through Ukraine as of 8:00 (Moscow time) on January 1, energy giant Gazprom reported. The company stated that it was “deprived of the technical and legal possibility” of supply.
“The validity of the documents signed on December 30, 2019 has ended: the agreement between Gazprom and Naftogaz for the organization of the transportation of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine and cooperation agreements between Russian and Ukrainian gas transmission network operators,” the Russian company said in a statement.
Gazprom also explained that the decision was taken “in connection with the repeated and explicitly expressed refusal by the Ukrainian side” to extend bilateral agreements.
For its part, the Ukrainian Energy Ministry described the current situation as a “historic event”. The agency wrote in a post on its social networks that the measure is being taken “in the interest of national security”.
Russia Today (RT) explained that the Slovak gas transportation company Eustream has already confirmed that the flow of gas from Ukraine to the country has been interrupted, according to Denník N.
European Commission spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen previously told Reuters that the cessation of gas supply through Ukraine as of January 1 was expected and the European Union (EU) was preparing for it.
