The Ministry of Health has announced the identification of the first cases of the XFG variant of COVID-19 in Argentine territory. The strain, known in the media as “Frankenstein”, derives from the recombination of two subtypes of Ómicron.
The National Epidemiological Bulletin has specified that the data refer to weeks 26 and 27, with a sustained increase that already represents more than half of recent samples. The World Health Organization (WHO) has included XFG in the category of “variants under surveillance”.
Among the clinical symptoms observed is loss of voice, which may manifest as hoarseness or aphonia in infected people.
The circulation of the XFG has been documented in countries in Asia and Europe, where it has achieved predominance in a short time. Health authorities emphasize that there is no evidence of greater seriousness in relation to other variants in circulation.
Local media report that hospitalizations for COVID-19 have fallen by 71.2% compared to the same period in 2024. The detection of this strain reinforces the need to maintain active genomic surveillance.
