This Tuesday, April 23, students and teachers from universities in Argentina participated in the demand for more funds for operating expenses and salaries in public universities. The protest was repeated in different parts of that country and was supported by other workers' unions.
After the presentation of teachers union leaders, the president of the Argentine University Federation (FUA), Piera Fernandez De Piccoli, read the document signed by all the directors of the national universities.
“The Argentine public university is going through a critical period as a result of the policy implemented by the national government,” said the text read by the student leader - quoted by the international press - in front of the crowd in Plaza de Mayo.
“We call on citizens to support open public universities. They are one of the engines of democracy, production and social ties,” he added.
Finally, the spokeswoman stated that “we want our institutions to be the device that allows Argentina to overcome structural inequalities and embark on the path of development and sovereignty.”
“Education saves us and makes us free. We call on Argentine society to defend it,” he urged.
