The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union (EU), Josep Borrell, stated that the United States has lost its “hegemonic status”, while China is “rising to the category of superpower”.
During a conference this Friday, May 03, at the University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom, he said that the international system, “to which we were used to” after the Cold War, “no longer exists”, reported the Russia Today portal.
“The United States has lost its hegemonic status. And the post-1945 multilateral (world) order is losing ground,” he said.
On the other hand, Borrell highlighted China's growth as something “unique in human history”, suggesting a certain superiority over the EU and the US in many ways.
“I see China rising to the status of a superpower,” he said.
In this regard, he argued that “in the last 30 years, China's share of world GDP, in terms of purchasing power parity, has risen from 6% to almost 20%, while we, the Europeans, went from 21% to 14% and the United States from 20% to 15%. This is a drastic change in the economic landscape.”
He also admitted that the world “is much more multipolar”, where intermediate powers such as India, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, South Africa or Türkiye are emerging .
“They are becoming important players,” he said.
