Governor of La Guaira unveiled the statue of the dog that saved more than 30 lives during the 1999 tragedy

A statue of Orión, the canine that saved more than thirty lives during the La Guaira tragedy in the year 99, was unveiled this Thursday in the vicinity of Plaza Las Palmeras, located in Tanaguarena, by Governor José Alejandro Terán.

The activity was attended by the Minister for Ecosocialism, Josué Lorca; the president of the Great Venezuela Youth Mission, Genesis Garvett; the sculptor of the work Manuel Parada and the owner of the canine Mauricio Pérez.

The Governor of La Guaira said that “today we are doing an act of justice before history. Not only was a monument built in homage to Orión so that future generations remember the example of heroism, loyalty, courage, of this Guairian dog, but a park has also been built for all the dogs in the area, so that they have here a space for recreation, to play with their parents and an attractive outfit also to always motivate the physical activity of all human beings”.

In this regard, Minister Lorca specified that “we are happy, happy and we are taking another step in consolidating a Venezuela of peace, joy and spiritual union. That's why President Nicolás Maduro, as another sign of love, of life and fulfilling the fifth objective of the Homeland Plan, did not hesitate a second to build the statue of Orion, a beautiful gift for the people of Venezuela.”

Manuel Parada, the sculptor in charge of the work, indicated that the proposal stems from a request from the inhabitants of La Guaira who have expressed their desire for a long time to make a monument in recognition of the canine hero.

The sculpture measures two and a half meters high, was made of resin and fiberglass and mounted on a rock that makes the historical relationship with the landslide. On the sides of that base there are two reliefs of Orion's first heroic exploits.
