Prosecutor Tarek William Saab: Spain and Venezuela agreed to grant safe conduct to Edmundo González Urrutia

This Sunday, September 8, the Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, held a press conference to discuss important points after the departure from the country of former presidential candidate and member of the opposition right wing, Edmundo González, and having been granted political asylum by Spain.

Saab read out the following official statement: The Public Ministry of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela speaks before the national or international community regarding the latest events involving citizen Edmundo González Urrutia, who has been requested by means of an arrest warrant for his repeated inappearances in response to summons made by the national Public Prosecutor's Office 58 to be interviewed.

1. This Public Ministry had first-hand knowledge of the exact moment when citizen Edmundo González Urrutia entered the embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Caracas. Then we were informed by the Venezuelan authorities of his request for asylum, within the framework of international human rights law and diplomatic relations between States.

2. The governments of Spain and Venezuela agreed to grant safe conduct to citizen Edmundo González Urrutia to leave the national territory and take advantage of the asylum granted by Spain. Consequently, this Public Ministry expresses its absolute respect for the decisions of the Venezuelan Executive so that, in compliance with the right to asylum, guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic in its article 69, it has granted the corresponding safe conduct.

3. Once in his communication to the Public Prosecutor's Office, received on September 4, citizen Edmundo González Urrutia expressed his recognition of our authority as Attorney General of the Republic and the powers of the institution we direct based on the Constitution and the Law, this Public Ministry has maintained the close communication established over the past few days with the judicial representative of Mr. González Urrutia, lawyer José Vicente Haro, for the consequent purposes of the case that Investigate this office
