Mónica Leydar, the current undisputed queen of Venezuelan pools, finished consecrating her dominance in the recent National Category Swimming Championship, held at the Roberto Flores pool in Fuerte Tiuna, where she broke records and won six golds in all types of swimming.
La Mirandina had demonstrated her absolute mastery of strokes in the past 2024 Eastern National Games, when she won 10 gold medals; a mastery for moving quickly through the lanes that she ratified in the National Championship by prevailing in speed and medium-distance events.
“It's not normal to lower the marks all the time in swimming,” confessed Leydar, who reaffirmed his dominance in the youth category B (16-18 years old) by breaking his own national record in the 400 meters combined individually with a time of 4:57.37.
In addition, he governed the 200 and 400 meter freestyle, 100 and 200 meter butterfly, and 200 backstroke events, which he attributes to the fact that he has learned the secrets of swimming to achieve victories, even without being at the top of his conditions.
“You're not always at your best, but you can try to swim well, smart, knowing what you're capable of, you can achieve a good result,” he analyzes the keys to his success.
Thanks to this winning mentality, it has managed to maintain a constant rate of improvement in its brands.
“I have been going down for at least a year or two years all my time, at least one competition always under a record, which is not normal at our level,” he stressed.
In the 2024 Youth National Games, Leydar did not have an “easy week” due to the physical and mental demands of competing in so many events, but it still shattered its marks and performed superbly for the Miranda delegation.
“The truth is that the mental strength needed is great, maybe it's your fifth test and you can't fail, or your rival's first; that means you have a physical load that your opponent doesn't have, and compared to the others you have to know how to deal with it,” he said.
In addition to her sporting talent, the Mirandina mermaid stands out for her dedication to studies. “I needed to do both,” he said of the importance of balancing sports and academic training, and thanked him for the “incredible support” offered to him by the teachers of the El Ávila Integral School to fully fulfill his school obligations.
She also supports her sports activities by a multidisciplinary team that advises her on her preparation, but what she values most is the “emotional support” of her family environment and her stainless steel mentality to face challenges.
As for his upcoming international commitments, he is aware of the demand of competing in multiple events in a short period of time.
“After the national championship, we have a schedule of four events for the month of August. It's a very difficult year,” he said.
To face these challenges, he focuses on preparation with a strong aerobic base to “perform at his best in all tests” and on careful recovery work to replenish energies.
With his sights set on the Junior Pan American Games in Asunción 2025, Leydar is preparing to continue to achieve success. Her talent, dedication and strategic mentality make her one of the most promising swimmers in Venezuela.
