During the XXIX Meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Association of Caribbean States (AEC), held this May 9 in Suriname, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Yván Gil, proposed creating a common work agenda involving the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America - Peoples' Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP), which “represents a fundamental example for understanding the importance and scope of unity and regional integration”.
Along these lines, he emphasized the importance of including not only Banco del Alba and Petrocaribe, “but all actors that can provide cooperation tools at the service of the peoples of the Caribbean.”
“Our main objective is the consolidated development of our region. Therefore, we urge us to commit ourselves to the task of achieving effective progress through concrete actions that address the needs of our region,” he said, while proposing to strengthen regional interconnectivity, which could materialize with “direct flights of the CONVIASA airline” to destinations in the region, following the example of what materialized with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, and soon Saint Lucia.
Regarding the alliance in tourism matters, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister specified that work is being done with the objective of certifying tourist destinations in Venezuela, an initiative that will contribute significantly to strengthening this industry in the region, promoting sustainable and responsible tourism.
In the context of the unity and solidarity that surrounds the AEC, as well as in the scenario of the imposition of unilateral coercive measures on Venezuela by the United States and its international partners, the minister claimed the “right to live on a continent free from any form of imperialist hegemony, respecting the sovereignty and dignity of each nation.”
“Our region does not escape challenges and, in addition to dealing with them, it has continued to struggle in this long confrontation with its historic enemy, the enemy of the development of peoples, of self-determination, of freedom: imperialism,” said Minister Gil.
The AEC -created in 1994- is committed to strengthening cooperation and cultural, economic, political, scientific, social and technological relations between its 25 member States and its 10 associated States.
